Monument Selection

The staff at Oakwood Cemetery can assist you in the selection and placement of a monument or memorial for you (pre-need) or your loved ones. We work closely with local monument companies who have provided years of service to families in our community. If you are interested in ordering a monument, please contact the cemetery office at your convenience.

Green Burial

In the Spring of 2016, Oakwood Cemetery opened Mordecai’s Meadow, a green burial section located in the North West section of Oakwood Cemetery. Green Burial is simple and natural. It reunites our bodies with the earth using biodegradable caskets, no embalming fluids, and no concrete or metal vaults. It allows the cycle of nature to be completed, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Veterans Section

Historic Oakwood Cemetery remembers these brave men and women who protected the ideals of liberty and freedom. They have earned the appreciation and respect, not only of their friends and family, but also of Americans everywhere. Accordingly, the Board of Directors, Raleigh Cemetery Association, Inc. has approved the establishment of an interment section within Historic Oakwood Cemetery dedicated exclusively to the growing needs of today’s veterans, their spouses and qualified dependents.

Cremation Memorials

Cremation is a popular and ever increasing method. But it is not the end. The staff at Historic Oakwood Cemetery are here to help you find a meaningful way to memorialize your loved one.

Historic Oakwood Cemetery provides multiple choices for placement of cremated remains. There are niches available in our mausoleum. Interment in a traditional single grave space or family lot is also possible. The cemetery also has Magnolia Walk, a beautiful path through our most historic section that hosts shared obelisks for multiple cremations. Even if you choose alternative methods of disposition, a marker can be placed here for future generations to view with love and respect for those family members that have gone on before.

Why is having a place to visit, even in this transient society, so important? Because it provides a focal point for memorializing the deceased. To remember, and be remembered, are natural human needs. Throughout human history, memorialization of the dead has been a key component of almost every culture. The Washington Monument, Tomb of the Unknowns and Vietnam “Wall” in Washington, D.C are examples of memorialization which demonstrate that, throughout our history, we have always honored our dead. Psychologists say that remembrance practices, from the funeral or memorial service to permanent memorialization, serve an important emotional function for survivors by helping to bring closure and allowing the healing process to begin. Providing a permanent resting place for the deceased is a dignified treatment for a loved one’s mortal remains, which fulfills the natural human desire for memorialization.

Pre-Planning

Did you know that within 48 hours of a loved one’s death there are over 85 decisions that need to be made? What better way to provide your family peace of mind, and help them deal with a loss of a loved one, than to pre-plan your final arrangements? The burden is removed from your loved ones by sparing them from making numerous emotional and financial decisions during a very stressful time. Pre-planning also ensures that your wishes are heard and planned for. We all carefully plan our lives, from weddings to retirement, why not plan for the last thing we will always need?

By pre-arranging, you also lock in services at today’s price. Most pre-need arrangements can be financed over time, and Historic Oakwood Cemetery offers convenient terms, if needed.
