Observe Memorial Day with your family at Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial Day is a holiday for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
2024 is the 100th anniversary of Raleigh’s 1st national Memorial Day.
Free tours and activities
Noon -3pm
Our history tent will be set up by the cemetery office, attendees can stop in to work on a Memorial Day craft and join a tour before our recognition ceremony at 4pm.

In 1924 women from the American legion Ladies Auxiliary organized our first official observance here at Oakwood. These women where the mothers, sisters and daughters of soldiers who fought in the great war.

This family friendly event is a great way to observe Memorial Day, the perfect venue to hear veteran’s stories and thank them for their sacrifice. We will talk about military headstones, symbolism, iconography and chat about why, when, and how American soldiers are transferred home after death.
Our Memorial Day Observance Ceremony begins at 4pm in the Field of Honor.
Attendees should arrive via the Oakwood Avenue entrance, there will be event signs to help navigate visitors through the cemetery to Field of Honor II where the observance ceremony will take place.
