DESCRIPTION:Plein Air Drawing and Painting Meetup \nJoin Program Coordinator and Artist Brianna McCormick the first Thursday of every month rain or shine to draw in Plein Air at Oakwood Cemetery. \nThis meetup is free and designed for artists of all ages and skill levels. \nWe will meet at the office at 9am and walk together to our location for the day. Bring water\, a chair or blanket and your favorite art supplies\, be prepared to observe and discuss monumental art\, cemetery flora and fauna\, in addition to our panoramic vistas of the city of Raleigh. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our First Friday Tours!   Sign up and join us at 6:30 to go on a guided tour of Historic Oakwood Cemetery.  The sun will begin to lower– and Oakwood comes alive with it’s history! \nSuggested donation: $10 per person \nPlease wear closed toed walking shoes and bring a bottle of water! \nThis is not a scary tour– but an educational one.  Not appropriate for children.

DESCRIPTION:Oakwood Cemetery is truly a cemetery full of life\, we maintain an active arboretum\, critical urban wildlife habitat\, as well as curated habitats for migratory and endangered species.\nJoin Oakwood Cemetery the second Thursday of the month for a morning of citizen science. The cemetery uses iNaturalist\, a free app available on all platforms to collect and record observations. We will walk together through the cemetery observing and recording what we see.\nWhat to expect:\n-Basic introduction to the I-naturalist app for those who need it\n-A low impact stroll through the cemetery\, our route will be subject to change and can easily be fit to suit visitors of all ages and abilities.\n-the opportunity to observe birds\, insects\, plants and animals in our unique urban wildlife habitat.\n-Engaging discussion catered to participants and drawn from curriculum designed to engage visitors of all ages.\nAbout the I-Naturalist App:\nFounded in 2008 as part of a graduate school project\, the iNaturalist community now has over 750\,000 participants around the world and is a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. The main goal of iNaturalist is to connect people to nature\, in addition to contributing useful global biodiversity data to support science. The opportunities for educators using iNaturalist are unlimited—student questions can drive explorations in nature\, create community-engaged projects\, analyze historical data\, and much more\nOakwood Cemetery contributes to this global resource by documenting flora and fauna on our grounds. By recording all species present\, weather invasive or indigenous we are able helping to build a greater understanding of global\, national and local populations.\nWant to contribute to this global citizen science project but can’t attend our program?\n-Simply: Download the iNaturalist app on any mobile device\n-Photograph plants\, animals and insects wherever you are\, home\, work or your local park.
