SUMMARY:Citizen Science Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Oakwood Cemetery is truly a cemetery full of life\, we maintain an active arboretum\, critical urban wildlife habitat\, as well as curated habitats for migratory and endangered species.\nJoin Oakwood Cemetery the second Thursday of the month for a morning of citizen science. The cemetery uses iNaturalist\, a free app available on all platforms to collect and record observations. We will walk together through the cemetery observing and recording what we see.\nWhat to expect:\n-Basic introduction to the I-naturalist app for those who need it\n-A low impact stroll through the cemetery\, our route will be subject to change and can easily be fit to suit visitors of all ages and abilities.\n-the opportunity to observe birds\, insects\, plants and animals in our unique urban wildlife habitat.\n-Engaging discussion catered to participants and drawn from curriculum designed to engage visitors of all ages.\nAbout the I-Naturalist App:\nFounded in 2008 as part of a graduate school project\, the iNaturalist community now has over 750\,000 participants around the world and is a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. The main goal of iNaturalist is to connect people to nature\, in addition to contributing useful global biodiversity data to support science. The opportunities for educators using iNaturalist are unlimited—student questions can drive explorations in nature\, create community-engaged projects\, analyze historical data\, and much more\nOakwood Cemetery contributes to this global resource by documenting flora and fauna on our grounds. By recording all species present\, weather invasive or indigenous we are able helping to build a greater understanding of global\, national and local populations.\nWant to contribute to this global citizen science project but can’t attend our program?\n-Simply: Download the iNaturalist app on any mobile device\n-Photograph plants\, animals and insects wherever you are\, home\, work or your local park. \nSee less

SUMMARY:Day of Remembrance- for families impacted by COVID
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 12th\, Historic Oakwood will be hosting a memorial event for those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19. \nGuests are invited to participate in the Grove of Remembrance\, a place where families and individuals can inscribe a ribbon with the name and memories of their loved one and tie it to the limbs of our crepe myrtle grove in the front lawn. \nWe believe that the ribbons create a beautiful spectacle while also sharing the community spirit cultivated here at Oakwood Cemetery. \nThis memorial event is the first of its kind at Oakwood Cemetery and we are honored to facilitate this community in celebrating the lives of those gone too soon due to COVID-19. \nThe event will be held from 3 PM to 5 PM\, accompanied by music performed by NC Symphony’s Anita Burroughs-Price. \nThe event is free and open to those who have experienced loss due to the coronavirus pandemic.

SUMMARY:Grove of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:At Oakwood Cemetery\, we want to create a unique and collective exhibition inspired by the changes that have occurred over the past year\, affecting how we mourn our loved ones and experience loss. To achieve this\, we have created The Grove of Remembrance starting July 12\, a place where you can write down your fondest memories\, or perhaps just the name\, of your departed loved ones on a biodegradable ribbon and fasten it to the limbs on any of the trees in our crepe myrtle grove located in the front lawn of the cemetery. Our hope is that we can provide an organic opportunity for people who deserve the opportunity to grieve their losses\, and to foster fellowship and togetherness within our community after an extended period of isolation.\n\n\nWe will be hosting an event to encourage support and participation in The Grove of Remembrance for anyone who is interested. In the meantime\, please feel free to inquire at the office on how to begin adorning our landscape with your cherished memories of your nearest and dearest.\n\n\nBoth the ribbon and participation are offered by Oakwood Cemetery free of charge.\nIf you are not local\, but would like us to honor your loved ones\, please let us know and we will assist you.
